About Kwajelyn

A small studio, quietly making things well.

Est. 2013

A workroom built around one stubborn idea: make things properly.

Kwajelyn Atelier began the year Harry Caldwell walked away from a busy commercial upholstery shop in downtown Dallas. He had spent ten years sewing curtains for hotels and film sets, and had grown quietly frustrated with the pace: hurried seams, glued hems, fabric chosen from a spreadsheet.

He rented a two-car garage on Waldeck Street, bought a heavy Juki walking-foot machine on payments, and hung a small sign that read simply Kwajelyn — by appointment. The first client was a neighbor who wanted her mother's dining chairs reupholstered in a soft ochre linen. She still comes back every winter for new table runners.

Twelve years on, we are still on the same street, still by appointment, and still refusing to rush. The garage has become a proper studio with north-facing skylights. The team has grown to five. The philosophy hasn't moved an inch.

The people

Who you'll actually be working with.

Founder

Harry Caldwell

Founder and lead measurer. Learned to sew from his grandmother in East Texas. Still does every home visit personally within a 40-mile radius of the studio.

Head Cutter

Ines Marchetti

Trained in a small drapery house in Turin. Cuts every yard of fabric that passes through the studio. Has a good eye for grain and a low tolerance for shortcuts.

Embroidery

June Whitmore

Hand embroiderer, third-generation needleworker. Personally stitches every monogram, crest and christening blanket that leaves the workroom.

What we believe

Four small principles we don't compromise on.

01

Measure twice, cut once.

Every window and every chair is measured in person, by a member of our team, before a scissor ever touches fabric.

02

Fabric with a paper trail.

We only work with mills we can name — mostly in Belgium, Italy and North Carolina — and we're happy to show you the invoices.

03

Repairs are free, forever.

If a seam we sewed ever fails, bring it back. We'll fix it at no charge, whether it's been two years or twenty.

04

Quiet over loud.

We don't chase trends. We make things that look like they were always meant to be in your home.
